FRISCO – The call came a day or two before the draft.

Jalen Tolbert didn’t recognize the cell phone number. Believing this to be the last team looking to confirm contact details, the former South Alabama wide receiver responded.

That’s when the NFL quarterback showed up.

“He was like, ‘It’s Dak Prescott, man. How are you?’ “Said Tolbert. “For a minute, it was like a surreal moment because I’ve never known quarterbacks called prospects. But it was awesome. We had a 20 minute conversation, and it was great. We immediately vibrated to the phone, connected right there.

More connections with Prescott are forthcoming.

Tolbert’s phone rang again Friday night. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones informed Tolbert that he would be the team’s third-round selection. The versatile point guard said he was relieved his draft acumen from Dallas turned out to be correct.

It wasn’t just the phone call from Prescott.

Cowboys new receivers coach Robert Prince arranged a private practice with Tolbert in March. Tolbert thought it went well, having demonstrated he could retain information while running routes that feature in Dallas’ offense.

After practice was over, Tolbert asked Prince if there was anything Prince thought he should improve on.

“He was like, ‘I’ll tell you when we make you a Cowboy,’” Tolbert said. “I kind of got a little hint there.”

Tolbert can line up at any wide receiver position, much like Cedrick Wilson, who signed with the Miami Dolphins in March. They have different styles of play though, as Tolbert is more of a threat on the pitch.

The smooth road runner rewrote the South Alabama record books with 178 career receptions for 3,140 yards and 22 touchdowns. He measured 6-1 and 194 pounds at the NFL combine, clocking in at 4.49 seconds in the 40-yard dash with a 36-inch vertical.

Any questions Tolbert had about the Cowboys’ interest were dismissed when Prescott called.

“We talked about my past relationships with my quarterbacks,” Tolbert said. “We talked about my strengths on and off the pitch. We talked about the challenges I had to overcome. Dak was asking me if he could put me in X alone on 3×1 or if I could go to the slot between CeeDee [Lamb] and Michael [Gallup]. All. We just talked.

Lamb, Gallup and Tolbert, James Washington and Noah Brown project themselves as the Cowboys’ top wide receivers in 2022. Gallup likely won’t be available at the start of the season due to surgery in February for a torn ACL.

Tolbert admits he felt nervous on Friday.

Wide receivers continued to be drafted. Everything was calm on his side. Then, with the No. 88 overall selection, Dallas was on point.

“The Cowboys did it,” Tolbert said. “I can’t wait to get out there and pick them up.”
