Many users have started testing the new features provided by Apple in the new iPhone 14 series. Traffic accident detection is one such new feature that uses sensors.

According to Apple, this feature can detect if a user has been in a car accident. If the feature detects a car accident and the user does not respond within 20 seconds, it will automatically initiate an emergency call. Devices that support Traffic Accident Detection include:

  • iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro phones running the latest version of iOS.
  • Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), and Apple Watch Ultra running the latest version of watchOS.

According to sourceUsers have expressed concerns about Troubleshooting being a new feature. To test it, a user put an iPhone 14 and Google Pixel in a derby, the driver wore an Apple Watch Ultra, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max and Google Pixel 6 were put in a truck.

The test will simulate an accident by crashing a derby car driven by a professional derby driver against a truck. This test aims to find out which devices are successful in enabling troubleshooting.

Apple’s response

An Apple spokesperson said the testing conditions do not meet the iPhone’s minimum requirements for the feature to work. The company claims that the sensor may not have received enough signal to trigger the feature. Also, there is no Bluetooth or CarPlay connection that indicates the car was in use.

Another excuse given by the company is that the car may not have driven enough distance before the accident to prove it was driving. The company claims that if the iPhone received these additional indicators, and the GPS showed that the car was on a real road, an alert would be more likely.

Of course, neither Google nor Apple’s car accident detection features can guarantee 100% detection of all types of car accidents or collisions. So the Troubleshooting setting on new iPhones also contains a disclaimer.
