Exit iPhone mini, enter iPhone Plus! Indeed, the rumors came true, and this year Apple launched a larger non-Pro model instead of a mini. We can only guess what Apple’s plans are around the mini model, but today’s review is about Apple’s latest addition to the iPhone range – the iPhone 14 Plus.

We thought the iPhone 13 would go down in history as the most insignificant iPhone update ever, but the iPhone 14 grabbed that title. See, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are based on the same Apple A15 Bionic chipset as the iPhone 13 models, and even the screen specs have remained the same – OLEDs with around 460ppi, 800nits brightness and 60Hz refresh.

In fact, there are only four notable upgrades on the iPhone 14 compared to the iPhone 13 – the new primary rear camera (lifted from the iPhone 13 Pro), the updated selfie camera with the new lens and AF, 2 GB more RAM and Emergency SOS via satellite function.

The new iPhone 14 Plus adds a few extras – the bigger screen and the bigger battery. The Plus model brings a Max-sized screen to the regular series – even if it’s only 60Hz.

The selfie camera, while retaining its 12 MP sensor, has a new brighter aperture lens with optical stabilization and autofocus. We’ve always wondered why Apple didn’t introduce AF features sooner, as the Face ID technology is there to provide a massive help with that, but alas, it’s finally here.

The iPhone 14 Plus is just as waterproof as the rest of the latest iPhones – it can last for 30 min. in up to 6 m deep clean water. And it should be a sought-after smartphone for its large screen and yet thin and light design. It’s also touted as the iPhone with the best battery life, and we’ll definitely be testing this out.

Let’s see the specifications first.

Apple iPhone 14 Plus specifications at a glance:

  • Body: 160.8×78.1×7.8mm, 203g; Glass front (Corning manufactured glass), glass back (Corning manufactured glass), aluminum frame; IP68 dust/water resistant (up to 6m 30 minutes), Apple Pay (Visa, MasterCard, AMEX certified).

  • OS/Software: iOS 16, can be upgraded to iOS 16.0.3.
  • Rear camera: wide (main): 12 MP, f/1.5, 26 mm, 1/1.7″, 1.9 µm, dual pixel PDAF, sensor-shift OIS; Ultra wide angle: 12MP, f/2.4, 13mm, 120˚.

  • Battery: 4323mAh; Fast charging, 50% in 30 min (advertised), USB Power Delivery 2.0, MagSafe fast wireless charging 15W, Qi wireless charging 7.5W.
  • Various: Face ID, accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass, barometer; NFC; stereo speakers; Ultra Wideband (UWB) support, Emergency SOS via satellite (SMS sending/receiving).

Like the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14, the iPhone 14 Plus has one glaring omission – high refresh rate support. And the size of the notch is apparently an eyesore you’ll have to put up with for a few more years. At least it subjectively looks smaller on this big screen.

We are happy that the non-Pro iPhones will get the new software features like Action Mode for the video camera, the improved Cinematic Mode and also the satellite connection.

Unpacking the iPhone 14 Plus

The eco-friendly iPhone case includes a USB-C to Lightning cable and iPhone 14 Plus. There’s also a SIM release pin, some paperwork and an Apple sticker.

Apple was among the first manufacturers to remove the headphones and charger from its boxes.

If you have a 20W+ USB-PD power adapter with a USB-C port, you should be good.
