How to customize and use the emergency function

Countdown sound

How to customize Apple Watch SOS

Apple Watch does not have the quick side button clicks for SOS. Instead, it offers two options.

  1. SOS with expectation: Press and hold the side button on the Apple Watch until the countdown begins and the emergency call is made
  2. SOS with cursor: Press and hold the side button until you see the power off screen, then use the SOS slider

The automatic SOS call feature is enabled by default in the Apple Watch app settings.

  1. Open the Apple Watch app on iPhone > My Watch > swipe down to Emergency SOS or on the wearable head to Settings app > swipe or scroll to SOS
  2. You can now deactivate Hold side button if desired

Apple Watch has loud countdown alert sound like iPhone. However, there is no option to disable it. Even with your iPhone or Apple Watch set to silent/vibrate, the countdown alert will sound.

If you feel like working out a bit, just to feel more comfortable with the SOS feature on iPhone and Apple Watch, just be sure to let the 2-second countdown go.

Remember that if you accidentally make an SOS call, you should be able to end it before it reaches the emergency services if you press Cancel as quickly as possible.

How to Set Up or Update Medical ID on iPhone

  1. Launch it Health app on iPhone
  2. From the Summary or Browse tab, tap your profile icon in the upper right corner
  3. Choose Medical ID > To modify
  4. Enter or update your information, including whether you want emergency responders to be able to see your Medical ID when your iPhone is locked and share your Medical ID during an emergency call
