The agreement gives both companies the freedom to innovate and reflects the strength of Nokia’s patent portfolio, decades of investment in R&D and contributions to cellular standards and other technologies. – Jenni Lukander, President of Nokia Technologies

The new deal will see Samsung make royalty payments to Nokia over a multi-year period with a start date of January 1, 2023. The actual terms of the deal remain confidential.

Nokia currently has over 20,000 patent families, of which 4,500 are considered critical to 5G technology. The company has invested over €130 billion in R&D since 2000.
