Samsung showcases 360-degree foldable screen and hinge prototype
Samsung Display showcased its new prototype screen and hinge that folds both inwards and outwards. The “Flex In & Out” concept enables the hinge to fold the device in 360 degrees, while creating a significantly less visible fold.
The prototype was demonstrated to The edgewhich did not provide any information on whether the new panel and hinge will be ready for commercial products anytime soon.
The display comes with a new hinge design that allows the device to fold completely instead of leaving a small teardrop-shaped hole in the fold. The prototype was pictured next to a Galaxy Z Fold smartphone, revealing that it will be as thick as the current foldable. However, we can see some moving mechanisms that allow the panel to bend comfortably without stretching.
Such a design would enable a new class of devices without the need for a cover display. This will in turn provide more space for larger batteries and larger camera sensors without making the phone too thick. Let’s just hope we see it in a commercialized product soon.
