Apple targets 25% Indian production share, government official reveals
Apple aims to move 25% of its production to India, the trade minister of the Asian country revealed. Speaking at a trade conference, Piyush Goyal said that around 5-7% of Apple products are currently manufactured in India and the target is for this number to increase fivefold.
The official did not provide a timeline, and Apple did not comment on the statement.
This is not the first time we hear about such a shift. Analysts previously predicted that 25% of iPhone production will move to India by 2025, and Foxconn is reportedly increasing its workforce at the factory just outside the city of Chennai.
The main reason Apple is moving away from China and Foxconn is diversifying its production across multiple factories is the uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions and the geopolitical tensions between Beijing and Washington.
