Apple orders OLED panels for iPad Pro, first to arrive in 2024
Apple placed orders for OLED panels for future iPad Pro and MacBook Pro devices, Korean sources revealed. According to insiders, 11″ and 12.9″ tablets are expected to arrive in 2024, while laptops with the new panels are planned for 2026.
The source also claims that foldable panels are being considered, but there are no concrete plans for them.
Apple currently uses LCD for its iPad Pro 11 and iPad Pro 12.9 tablets. The new panels are currently being developed and manufactured on a limited scale and it will take some time before they are available for final assembly.
The situation with the MacBook Pro is the same – both the 14″ and 16″ versions eventually had to cope with the switch. So far, Apple has only used OLED for the touch bar, and it was removed from 2022 notebooks.
Apple is pushing for OLED adoption to create more competition in the manufacture of these, ultimately lowering the panel price. Samsung Display and LG Display are expected to be the main suppliers as both companies have strong ties to Cupertino as they already supply panels for iPhones.
