Corning confirms that the Galaxy S23 series will pioneer Gorilla Glass Victus 2

Samsung had dibs on the original Gorilla Glass Victus, then the Galaxy S22 series was the first to introduce the improved Victus+, and now history is repeating itself. The upcoming Galaxy S23 models will be the first to feature the new Gorilla Glass Victus 2.

Version 2 is focused on surviving drops, including drops on very rough surfaces such as concrete from up to 1m (hip height) or up to 2m (head height) if dropped on tarmac. However, this improved drop resistance did not come at the expense of scratch resistance.

GG Victus 2 has an eco-friendly streak as it contains an average of 22% “pre-consumer” recycled content. This has given it an environmental claim validation mark.

The press release kept the details of the phones vague, not even mentioning the “S23” explicitly. But given the timing (Galaxy Unpacked for the S23 series is scheduled for Wednesday), there’s no question.

Presumably, the Victus 2 will be used to protect both the front and back of the phones, just as the Victus+ protects both sides of each S22 phone. Here’s what Stephanie Choi, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at Samsung MX had to say about the new glass:

“We are committed to integrating sustainability throughout our product lifecycle and are working with like-minded partners like Corning to improve performance while reducing our environmental impact. Our next-generation Galaxy flagship smartphones are the first devices to use Corning® Gorilla® Glass Victus® 2, which provides better durability and improved sustainability at the same time.”

And a word from David Velasquez, Vice President and General Manager, Gorilla Glass:

“Today’s consumers expect damage-resistant smartphone screens. For more than a decade, Gorilla Glass has met the needs of smartphone users and set the standard for hard cover materials. We are proud to continue our long partnership with Samsung and have our latest innovations play a critical role in Samsung’s latest Galaxy smartphones.”
