Many years ago, Xiaomi unveiled a tablet that could optionally run Windows. However, it was not until today that the company unveiled its first Windows-powered 2-in-1 convertible. It is a 12.4 ”tablet with an optional keyboard that can make it an ultra portable laptop.

XiaomiBook S 12.4 ”is powered by Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2, a 7nm chipset from the Snapdragon 865 generation. At the time, Qualcomm compared this by saying that at 7W TDP it is faster than a 15W Intel Core i5 10th gen.

In any case, this board runs Windows 11, which includes x86-64 emulation, so you can run PC software that is not native to ARM (Windows 10 could only perform 32-bit x86 emulation).

The 12.4 ”LCD screen has 2,560 x 1,600 px resolution (244ppi, 16:10, 60Hz) and 100% DCI-P3 coverage. It promises 500 nits brightness at full blast. The body of the tablet is made of an aluminum-magnesium alloy, it measures 8.95 mm thick and weighs only 720 g. The front is guarded by Gorilla Glass 3.

For connectivity, you get a USB-C port that can power an external 4K monitor as well as perform the usual charging tasks. There is also a 3.5mm headphone jack on board, plus a microSD slot to expand the memory. Speaking of which, the Snapdragon chipset is paired with 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 256GB of storage.

Wireless connectivity features include Wi-Fi 5 (ac) and Bluetooth 5.1. There is no option for mobile connection, at least not on the version launched in Europe. So you may need to run a Wi-Fi hotspot on your phone if you need to join a Zoom call on the go. The 1080p front-facing camera will be handy for that, it is connected by two microphones using Qualcomm’s Aqstic echo cancellation and noise suppression technology. In addition, there are stereo speakers on the sides.

Battery capacity is not stated, but the tablet will provide 13.4 hours of regular use according to official figures. Charging is fast thanks to the 65W GaN charger, which is usually sold separately.

XiaomiBook S 12.4 ”has a normal price of € 700. Pre-orders start on June 30 and during the first 48 hours the price is reduced to € 600. As an added benefit, the 65W charger – usually € 40 – will be included free of charge for the first two days.

And although you can use it as a tablet, it gets much better with the keyboard cover. It is a full-size keyboard with 1.3 mm keystroke plus a touchpad. The outside is made of PU leather and there is a built-in support leg to support the tablet. The keyboard cover is attached to the tablet using pogo pins and adds 317 g of weight.

This cover costs € 150, but the first 250 buyers get a € 50 discount. A standard cover is available for € 40.

An additional accessory you can pick up for your XiaomiBook is the Smart Pen. The display tracks the pen at a 240Hz sampling rate and can distinguish 4,096 pressure levels. The pin is battery powered, but a full charge only takes 18 minutes, and if you really can not wait that long, a 1 minute charge will give you 20 minutes of use.
