July 2022 movie preview: Thor and Minions storm the theaters

Even though Jurassic World Dominion and Top Gun: Maverick were June’s biggest moneymakers, Marvel Studios will likely reclaim the box office this month with Thor: Love and Thunder. The film will not only see Chris Hemsworth transform into Thor again, but also the return of Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, who this time wields Mjolnir as Mighty Thor. Additionally, they and several other characters will go against the infamous Gorr the God Butcher, played by the former Batman and American psycho Christian Ball.

Other great movies are also coming out this month. From a screen adaptation of a bestselling novel (Where the Crawdads sing) to a sci-fi/horror film by writer/director Jordan Peele (Nope), July 2022 is packed with movies for all audiences. If you’re looking to have a good time at the movies, here are some movies you should watch out for.

What is it about: 12-year-old Gru works with the Minions to become the greatest super-villain of all time.

Who will love: Kids, Minions fans, anyone who loves the 1970s.

Insight: After five years, the Minions are finally back on the big screen. Even though this movie is supposed to be an origin story for Steve Carell’s Gru, the Minions will most likely be front and center since they’ve essentially become the face of the Despicable Me franchise. Still, it’s nice to see Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren host a Universal Soldier reunion, albeit in an animated film about cute yellow aliens.

Who will love: MCU finalists, Taika Waititi fans, Chris Hemsworth stans.

Insight: Writer/director Taika Waititi returns to the MCU to deliver another fun and colorful film about the God of Thunder. While few were fans of Natalie Portman in the first two Thor films, this new movie gives the actress a chance to redeem herself as the Mighty Thor. Plus, seeing a villain as menacing as Gorr the Butcher God in a Taika Waititi movie is sure to be something, especially with Christian Bale in the role. The film promises to be lighter and funnier than Marvel’s last entry, in which the Scarlet Witch fought Dr. Strange and (spoiler!) killed Mr. Fantastic.

Luckily, it still features an all-star voice cast that includes Michael Cera, Samuel L. Jackson, and Michelle Yeoh. Who knows? It might even fill the kung fu panda void of a decent animated film inspired by Asian culture.

What is it about: In the 1950s, a widowed housekeeper travels from London to Paris to get a Dior couture dress she so desperately wants.

Who will love: Romance fans, British comedy fans, feel-good movie buffs.

Insight: Based on the best-selling novel by Paul Gallico, Mrs. Harris goes to Paris looks like a fun and heartwarming movie for all ages. Although Lesley Manville played a stern and unwavering business leader in 2017 ghost yarn, she plays a much more comedic role in this new film. Funnily enough, both movies deal with fashion in the 1950s, but we can almost guarantee that Daniel Day-Lewis won’t appear in this one.
