With more providers around the world adopting the eSIM standard, we may soon have phones without physical SIM slots. According to a report published on Wall Street Journal, Apple’s upcoming iPhone 14 series may come in eSIM versions for some markets. Apple is not expected to make the full switch from physical SIM card to eSIM on all its devices, but rather test whether consumers will be open to a phone that is only eSIM.
Apple has reportedly already notified several major US carriers to prepare for their iPhone models, which are only eSIM due to arrive in the fall. The main advantage of removing the SIM slot on a phone is that it frees up little physical space inside the phone that can be used for other components. Security is another aspect that will benefit users as telecommunications can send security updates to millions of users simultaneously.
