Canalys: smartphone shipments in India decline for third consequtive quarter

Based on the latest Canalys report, a total of 36.4 million smartphones were shipped in India in the period April-June. The figure represents a decrease of five percentage points compared to the 38 million units shipped in the first quarter. This is the third quarter in a row with declining shipments.

Chinese suppliers accounted for 76% of all smartphone shipments in India during the period with Xiaomi leading with 7 million shipments and a market share of 19%. Samsung shipped 6.7 million units and came in second place in terms of market share of 18%. The top three were rounded by realme, which handled 6.1 million shipments and a market share of 17%. The other two brands in the top five were vivo (6 million shipments) and Oppo (5.5 million) with 16% and 15% market shares, respectively.

There is some good news – total shipments increased by 12% compared to the values for Q2 2021. The main reason for the lower demand in this quarter was high inflation levels, which changed consumer consumption patterns and demand for smartphones. Brands like Xiaomi, vivo and Oppo were also under control of tax evasion and money laundering investigations.
