- A new study has found that displaying an iPhone in your dating profile delivers a massive boost in matches.
- The iPhone was the uncontrollable leader, but showing off a Samsung or Google phone also drove gains.
- You might want to change your photos if you have an Oppo, Huawei, or BlackBerry phone.
We already know iPhones are all the rage among American teens and young adults thanks to iMessage. However, a new study has revealed that flashing an iPhone might be best for your romantic prospects.
MoneySuperMarket conducted a study of various swipe dating apps between March and June 2022. The study saw people create identical dating profiles in various cities across 14 countries, with the only difference being the tech brand featured in the profiles. This was done to find out which tech brand gave a boost in matches versus not flashing any tech brand at all.
The study used Apple iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone SE, Apple Watch Series 6, second-generation AirPods, Fitbit Versa, Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra and S22 Ultra, Beats Solo 3, the Google Pixel 6 Pro, Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, Sony Xperia 1 III, OnePlus 9 Pro, Oppo Find X5 Pro, Huawei Mate 40 Pro and BlackBerry Key2 LE. In other words, we were usually reviewing relatively new devices.
Apple in the lead
It turns out that Apple’s iPhone provided the biggest boost in matches, with an 82% increase over no tech brand. In fact, the Apple Watch (76%) and Apple AirPods (64%) round out the top three performers. A Fitbit watch (32%) and a Samsung phone (19%) rounded out the top five.
As with other Android-based brands, only Google (9%) increased the number of matches. Meanwhile, Sony (-11%), OnePlus (-18%), Oppo (-22%) and Huawei (-24%) all saw declines in matches compared to showing no technology.

Huawei wasn’t the worst performer though, as flashing a BlackBerry resulted in a massive 77% drop in matches. I doubt owning a Unihertz Titan would offer much better performance.
MoneySuperMarket also shared a country-by-country breakdown with Android Authority, indicating the best tech item for matches in each market along with the corresponding boost. Unsurprisingly, the US preferred the iPhone, with its 97% increase in matches, leaving other markets far behind. The breakdown also shows the average of all tech brands that showed improvements in match rates. Check it out below.
The website also ran a selfie test, as four models took three selfies with three different phones (iPhone 13 Pro, Google Pixel 6 Pro, and Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra). He then asked a panel of 1,000 users to choose their favorite snap based on whether they were more inclined to swipe right or if they found the model to look more attractive in a photo.
Well, that turned out to be a huge win for Google as 44% of users surveyed preferred the Pixel 6 Pro’s selfies. Samsung delivered in this regard too, with 32% believing the S22 Ultra took the best shots. Finally, 24% of users surveyed said the iPhone 13 Pro took the best selfies.
In other words, the study suggests you might want to get a case with an Apple logo on it, but use a Google or Samsung phone to take your dating profile selfies.
