Xiaomi 12S Ultra’s main camera sensor gets measured on video

Xiaomi’s 12S Ultra rocked the mobile world this year, bringing to the table the biggest sensor ever put into a smartphone. And so many people may have heard the term “1-inch sensor” for the first time, and naturally assumed that it means what you think it means.

Unfortunately, the camera placement is weird, and it turns out that an inch doesn’t always mean an inch in a literal way. We’ve explained this in detail in our extensive review of the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, but that doesn’t mean everyone knows it now – or that everyone will be able to refrain from making a certain type of joke about an inch not being an inch.

Key words JerryRigEverything, the YouTube channel that usually brings us smartphone teardowns. We get that this time too, but also a sensor measurement competition. Armed with a couple of one-inch pieces of paper, Zack made it his mission to boldly walk into the 12S Ultra and tear it down to find out something that we already told you a few weeks ago in our review, which counts as general camera lore: “1 inch” can be shorthand for saying “1 inch type”, which doesn’t mean it measures exactly one inch on any side or diagonal.

Every camera manufacturer and every smartphone manufacturer is “cheating” if your expectation is that things measure in inches exactly the numbers advertised. This has been a long-standing problem, and unfortunately one that no company involved in the production of cameras, camera sensors or smartphones has any incentive to solve. So we just have to get used to the fact that sometimes an inch doesn’t mean an inch.
