Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event – what to expect

After some initial hesitation, Samsung confirmed that the next Galaxy Unpacked event will take place on August 11 and will go under the slogan “Get ready to unfold”. TM Roh, president of Samsung’s mobile business, dropped a few hints on what to expect – the first S Pen for a collapsible device, larger and more durable screens, improved multitasking and closer collaboration with Microsoft on software development.

You may have followed the countless leaks closely, but if you have not, here’s a summary of what will be revealed on Wednesday. In short, two foldable (Fold and Flip), two watches and a new TWS headset. Let’s take a closer look at each one.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3

Although there is no Note21, S Pen support was added for the Galaxy S21 Ultra and it also comes for the Galaxy Z Fold3. The 7.6 ”internal screen will be larger than any Note phone so far, giving you extra space to take notes or outline your ideas. However, the pen will not integrate as well with the phone as it does with the Note models.

For example, you need to charge it via USB-C, instead of charging it when you run it into your phone. This is because there is no space for a stylus inside the phone. Instead, there will be a special S Pen case that lets you carry the pen with the phone. It is not clear whether the external 6.2 ”display supports the pen or not. Incidentally, there should be two supported styluses: S Pen Pro (expected to cost £ 70 / € 80) and S Pen Fold Edition.

The internal screen will also be Samsung’s first with a camera below the screen. It will record 4MP photos, although it is probably a pixel from a 16MP sensor. The external display has a typical hollow camera (10MP). As for the main camera setup on the Z Fold3, we expect to see a triple 12MP camera again (wide, ultra wide, telephoto).

The foldable is powered by Snapdragon 888 and (possibly) an Exynos 2100, distributed in the usual areas. The chipset should have better cooling than the S21 Ultra. The battery capacity will be 4,400 mAh, in other words a little less than on the Z Fold2. Interestingly, the Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 are the first foldable to have waterproofing with an IPX8 rating (up to 1m depth for 30 minutes or more).

According to leak prices, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 (256 GB) will cost € 1,900 / € 2,000 in Europe, which will also be a 512 GB model for around € 120 / £ 110 more. In the US, Samsung allows you to trade in two devices when you buy a Z Fold3 or Z Flip3 (it can be phones, tablets or watches). In India, Z Fold3 starts around INR 1,35,000.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3

Galaxy Z Flip3 must have a smaller body than its predecessor, while maintaining the battery capacity of 3,300 mAh. This year, Samsung may increase the wired charging speed from 15W to 25W (although some rumors say it will still be 15W). The same 25W charger is also included with the Z Fold3.

Flip maintains its internal screen size of 6.7 ”, but the external screen will now be much more usable at 1.9” (it will be able to fit a few lines of text instead of a few words). The camera does not change, but the phone gets the familiar dual 12 MP setup (plus a 10 MP selfie camera on the inside).

This phone will also be powered by the Snapdragon 888 chipset. It is not clear if there will be an Exynos variant, it has not been in previous iterations.

Samsung is launching a curious set of cases for the Galaxy Z Flip3, including some (vegan) leather, silicone and transparent options.

Samsung Galaxy Watch4 and Watch4 Classic

Samsung will unveil two watches-Galaxy Watch4 Classic with a hardware-rotating bezel and the more sporty (frameless) Galaxy Watch4 model. Both come in large and small sizes with 1.36 ”and 1.19” displays respectively (450 x 450 px resolution in both cases). Battery life should also be up to 7 days with a 361mAh power cell in the larger models and a 247mAh in the smaller time periods.

The classic models will be made of stainless steel and measure 46 mm and 42 mm in diameter. The vanilla models will be aluminum and will be slightly smaller at 44 mm and 40 mm. Both models will have Gorilla Glass DX above the screen, an IP68 dust and water resistance (up to 5 ATM).

After several years of operation of the internal Tizen OS, the new watches are moved to Wear OS, however with One UI Watch 3.5 on top. This means that Google apps (such as Maps) will be available in the Watch4 series, as will Google Assistant (and Bixby as well).

Samsung Health will be on board to count your steps, monitor your heart rate and blood oxygen level (SpO2), which will also be an ECG feature, plus the watches will be able to analyze the user’s body composition.

The Watch4 series is powered by the Exynos W920 chipset, which is described as “1.25x faster processing times compared to Exynos 9110” and “8.8x smoother graphics performance”. The chip is connected to 1.5 GB of RAM (up to 1.0 GB on the Watch3 series) and dual storage (16 GB).

European prices for the Watch4 are expected to start at € 280 for the 40 mm model and € 310 for the 44 mm. The classic version costs 380 € for a 42 mm watch and 410 € for a 46 mm watch. Amazon Canada also leaked the watch prices, Watch4 will be CAD310 / CAD347 for the 40/44 mm versions, Watch4 Classic will go to CAD428 / CAD464 for the 42/46 mm models respectively.

Samsung Galaxy Buds2

Samsung’s new TWS headset, Galaxy Buds2, has Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) with 3 microphones per. Earplugs. The battery life of the buds alone will be 5 hours with ANC, 8 hours without, the case adds 13/20 hours more. Charging the knobs for 5 minutes gives you almost an hour of listening time. Wireless Qi charging will complement the USB-C port.
