vivo TWS 2 earphones review

Introduction

Another pair of wireless earphones came to our office, and this time it’s the vivos TWS 2 – the manufacturer’s premium active noise reduction offering (ANC). In terms of design, these look like your standard 2021 knobs with in-ear silicone tips and short stems. How do they stack up against the sea of other TWS on the market? Let’s dive down.

Design and build quality

Let’s start with the obvious, the TWS 2 has an AirPods Pro-inspired design. The white model is particularly similar to Apple’s offering, while our review unit’s Starry Blue paintjob stands out with its two-tone design and color-changing features. TWS 2 are quite light thanks to their short stems and feel really light to the ears, even after several hours of listening. Each knob weighs 5 grams, while the charging case comes out to 33 grams.

There are 12.2 mm drivers in each knob and three microphones that handle voice recording and noise reduction. The knobs require a slight turn counterclockwise when you put them in the ear to get a proper seal. You get small, medium and large silicone tips and I found the medium size to be optimal for my ears. The box also comes with a short USB-C to USB-A cable for charging.

In terms of build quality, TWS 2 feels solid, even though their glossy paint jobs attract a plethora of fingerprints and stains. I also had a hard time getting the buds out of the case on certain occasions, which in turn is to blame for the shiny plastic in my opinion. The lid of the case feels flimsy and rattles when you shake the case. There is a single USB-C connector on the bottom and a pairing button on the front with an LED status sensor.

Features

TWS 2 offers Google Fast Pair that works with any Android 6.0+ phone or tablet. The headphones connect via Bluetooth 5.2 and support Qualcomm’s aptX Adaptive codec. These knobs also use high bandwidth QHS transmission at 6 Mbps, which is double the traditional A2DP Bluetooth protocol. In addition, vivo boasts a self-developed Bluetooth antenna design that improves signal reception.

Merging Qualcomm’s aptX and QHS bandwidth transfer with vivo Bluetooth antenna modification is called DEEP-HD Audio, but the catch is that it only works on certain vivo phones, so users on any other device will not be able to experience the true potential of TWS 2.

The knobs offer dynamic ANC with up to 40dB noise reduction along with a transparency mode that lets in ambient sounds so you are more aware that you are surrounding yourself. There is also multipoint connection that works well even if you notice a few seconds delay when switching between a laptop and phone in my case. I also noticed that the sound would normally start on the right earplug first before reaching the left several times when switching between devices. That said, multipoint pairing worked well enough in my tests so I could use TWS as my only pair of earphones all day.

The touch-sensitive touch controls on the TWS 2 require you to use two fingers to press gestures to control your sound, calls, or call Google Assistant. These gesture controls work quite well once you get used to them. I personally am more of a fan of having controls on the outer part of the stems so I can adjust the functions with one finger.

vivo Headphones app

The headphone app from vivo is one of the most spartan looking companion apps I have seen so far. There are no sound profiles or any kind of sound adjustment. You only get ANC checks, change of gesture control and registration of earphones.

Sound quality

vivo TWS 2 sounds decent, but is not on par with other manufacturers’ premium wireless earphones. Heights are evident, while the meanwhile sounds muted, and the bass is there, though not too prominent. 12.2 mm driver units reproduce a balanced sound profile, and unfortunately you can not set it in the companion app to better suit your personal taste.

Compared to a few Samsung Galaxy Buds + I had lying around, the vivo TWS 2 felt noticeably less powerful in terms of bass and doesn’t get nearly as loud. Switching between Transparency and ANC modes on vivos resulted in no significant difference on my part, which was a downturn. I did not use a vivo-connected phone for my test, which may be the underlying problem, although other brands of wireless earphones work fine with devices from different manufacturers.

During calls, people on the other hand reported that my voice was loud and clear with no noticeable difference compared to when I was talking on my phone. I noticed some delay while watching movies and YouTube videos, even though it was nothing to stand up for.

Battery life

vivo claims that the TWS 2 can last up to 29 hours on a single charge with the ANC off. Each knob should last you 4-7 hours depending on ANC use. In my test, TWS 2 lasted me a week of daily use, which ranged from one hour of listening on some days to 3-4 hours of sessions on other days.

A full charge took just under two hours, which is pretty standard on most cordless earphones I’ve tested, though several premium models from Huawei and Samsung offer faster charging.

Dom

With vivo TWS 2, you get average build quality and sound at a fraction of the price of other premium wireless earphones. But their exclusive positioning in Asia means the TWS 2 is hard to recommend. The virtually useless ANC and vivo barebones companions app doesn’t help their case either.

Even at CNY 499 (around $ 77 / € 66), which TWS 2 sells for in China, it’s better to look for a pair of Huawei FreeBuds series earphones or an older pair of Samsung Galaxy Buds. It requires a special use case to make the vivo TWS 2 the right ones for you, and it should involve an assessment of battery life and ergonomic design above all else.

You would probably be better off looking elsewhere to spend your money if you are looking for a pair of TWS earphones. That said, if these are bundled with a vivo smartphone you are keen on, you get the essential TWS experience.
