The first Apple iPod appears with a rare design in new photos, 20 years after its launch

October 23 marks the 20th anniversary of the release of the first iPod by former Apple CEO and co-founder Steve Jobs. To celebrate this achievement, developer Cabel Sasser from Panic He posted exclusive photos on his official blog of an iPod prototype that no one has seen before.

Oldest iPod design

The rare prototype had a simple case that was oversized compared to the original iPod that was launched, and according to Cabel Sasser, this iPod prototype was released on September 3, 2001.

This device appears to be just an Apple prototype, and its disassembly reveals several items containing the Apple name and other identifying tags, such as the “SPG Development” label, which indicates it is original.

The first is powered by the iPod’s own driver and even has a small scroll wheel in the upper left corner next to the screen, and there are also several touch buttons on the right side of the device.

Looking at the picture of the device being disassembled, the case looks pretty empty on the inside, its components take up very little internal space and the wires are held in place with duct tape. A label on one of the components bears the date September 3, 2001, indicating that it was manufactured less than two months before release.
