vivo V23 Pro in for review

vivo started 2022 with two new smartphones, dubbed the vivo V23 and vivo V23 Pro. And we have received the Pro model in our office for review.

Vivo V23 Pro is offered in the colors Stardust Black and Sunshine Gold, where the latter has a particularly exciting color-changing glass panel on the back. But before we get to that, let’s see what the retail package contains.

The V23 Pro comes in a shiny, blue-colored case, including a 44W adapter, USB-C cable, wired headphones, a protective silicone case, SIM eject tool and the usual paperwork.

The Vivo V23 Pro is built around a 6.56 “FullHD + 90Hz curved AMOLED screen with a fingerprint reader underneath for biometric authentication, which we found was fast and accurate in the short time we spent with the phone.

The screen is protected by Schott Xensation Alpha and has a notch for two cameras – a 50 MP primary selfie device with Eye Autofocus and an 8 MP Super Wide Angle device for group photos. You also get two flash modules that flank the notch, called the Dual-Tone Spotlight, to help you take brighter pictures in low light conditions.

Around the back we get a gold-colored, plastic-made camera-island-house LED flash and three cameras – 108 MP primary, 8 MP ultrawide and 2 MP macro. The panel is covered by Fluorite AG Glass, which has a texture and feel reminiscent of the rear panel of the Oppo Reno6 Pro 5G Dimensity model.

The glass on the Sunshine Gold variant changes color when exposed to sunlight or other artificial UV light sources. vivo tells us that its duration depends on how strong the exposure of the UV light is, but ideally the panel will return to its original color within 5-6 minutes, which is something we can confirm from the time we have used with the phone.

While vivo says that the color of the panel changes when exposed to sunlight or artificial UV light sources, it is worth mentioning that you do not specifically need to put the smartphone in direct sunlight for the change to happen. The color also changes under natural light within seconds, even when inside the included transparent case, which is impressive.

The back cover also reflected a bluish hue at various angles under artificial lighting, but did not turn from gold to blue. Furthermore, only the glass panel changes to blue and not the camera island, buttons and frame.

The Vivo V23 Pro Sunshine Gold model looks great. The smartphone also has a slim profile and offers a really nice feeling in the hand. However, the rear panel would have had more curvature for a comfortable grip.

Under the hood, the vivo V23 Pro has a Dimensity 1200 SoC and runs Android 12-based Funtouch OS 12 out of the box. However, the company has not given promises with the number of Android version upgrades to V23 Pro.

The V23 Pro comes in two memory configurations – 8 GB RAM + 128 GB storage and 12 GB RAM + 256 GB storage. Both models support virtual RAM expansion up to 4 GB.

Charging the entire package is a 4,300 mAh battery that draws power through a USB-C port of up to 44W. vivo has not announced any charging times, but we will be sure to test it in our full review, so stay tuned!
